Вольга Іпатава нарадзілася 1 студзеня 1945г ў гарадскім пасёлку Мір у сям’і службоўцаў. Пасля смерці маці выхоўвалася ў дзіцячым доме (1956-1961). У 1961 г. скончыла ў Гародні сярэднюю школу №7 і паступіла на філалагічны факультэт Беларускага дзяржаўнага ўніверсітэта. Настаўнічала ў вёсцы Руба на Віцебшчыне, працавала тавараведам у Віцебскім абласным кнігагандлі (1964), інструктарам, загадчыкам сектара ў Гарадзенскім гаркаме камсамолу (1965-1968), рэдактарам на абласной студыі тэлебачання (1968-1970). У 1970-1973 гг. - літсупрацоўнік газеты «Літаратура і мастацтва», затым літкансультант газеты «Чырвоная змена». У 1975-1978 гг. - аспірантка Літаратурнага інстытута ў Маскве. Зноў працавала літкансультантам у «Чырвонай змене» (1978-1979). У 1985-1989 гг. - галоўны рэдактар літаратурна-драматычных перадач Беларускага тэлебачання. З 1989 г. - загадчык аддзела, з 1990 г. - намеснік галоўнага рэдактара часопіса « Спадчына». Сябра СП СССР з 1970 г. Узнагароджана ордэнам «Знак Пашаны» і медалём Францішка Скарыны. У 1991-1995 гадах Вольга Іпатава была галоўным рэдактарам газеты «Культура». З 1998 па 2001 год — намеснік старшыні, а з 2001 па 2002 год — старшыня Саюза пісьменнікаў Беларусі. У 2009 годзе ўвайшла ў грамадскі аргкамітэт «Міленіум Літвы». У звароце аргкамітэта гаварылася, што назва Літва адносіцца да старажытнай тэрыторыі Беларусі, а цяперашнія беларусы да пачатку ХХ стагоддзя называлі сябе ліцвінамі.

Volha Ipatava was born January 1st, 1945 in the town of Miri, Karelichi District, Grodno Region, into a family of civil servants. After her mother's death, she was raised in an orphanage (1956–1961). In 1961, she graduated from secondary school No. 7 in Grodno and entered the Faculty of Philology of the Belarusian State University. In 1963, she transferred to the correspondence department, which she graduated in 1967. She worked as a teacher in the village of Ruba in the Vitebsk region, a merchandiser in the Vitebsk regional bookstore (1964), an instructor, head of a sector in the Grodno city committee of the Komsomol (1965–1968), and an editor at the regional television studio (1968–1970). In 1970–1973, she was a literary employee of the newspaper "Literature and Art", then a literary consultant for the newspaper "Čyrvonaja zmiena". In 1975–1978, she was a postgraduate student at the Literary Institute in Moscow. In 1978–1979, she again worked as a literary consultant at "Čyrvonaja zmiena". In 1985–1989, she was the editor-in-chief of literary and dramatic programs on Belarusian television. Since 1989 - head of the department, since 1990 - deputy editor-in-chief of the magazine "Heritage". In 1991-1995, Olga Ipatova was editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Culture". From 1998 to 2001 - deputy chairman, and from 2001 to 2002 - chairman of the Union of Belarusian Writers. In 2009, she joined the public organizing committee "Millennium of Lithuania". The organizing committee's address stated that the name Lithuania refers to the ancient territory of Belarus, and current Belarusians called themselves Litvins until the beginning of the 20th century.
