The album "Varažbit" (Enchenter) by Ivan Kirchuk
Fascinated with folk art, Ivan Ivanovich Kirchuk has been promoting and showing Belarusian folklore on national and international cultural platforms for 40 years. It all started with the first folklore and ethnographic expedition in 1983 to the Luban district of the Minsk region. In the village of Sarachi listening to Shmyelova Pilageya Mikhailovna, he recorded folklore from morning until one in the morning! From that time, Ivan Kirchuk fell in love with the wisdom of his ancestors, and began to study and illustrate the best examples of folklore at concerts, master classes, and festivals. In this, he was well helped by the members of the group "Diva", which he created based on the Minsk Institute of Culture Studies in 1985.In 1995, Ivan Kirchuk created the group "Troitsa" during many experiments with the folk manner of singing, in combination with various instruments and sound accompaniments. In 27 years the group took part in more than 100 festivals in Belarus, Russia, Western Europe, and the United States of America and performed in Malaysia, Spain, and Canada. It also made a strong statement at the three largest "Womad" festivals organized by the European music producer and singer Peter Gabriel in England, Chile, and Russia.
In 1999, at the famous European recording studio PAN Records, Ivan Kirchuk recorded his first ethnic solo album "Spadčyna zahinuŭšych viosak" (Legacy of the Lost Villages), which was distributed almost all over the world. The disc presents stylized authentic songs collected in numerous expeditions around Belarus. As accompaniments, some melodies are played on folk musical instruments made by Belarusian masters (reed, ocarina, pipe, gusli, bagpipe, lyre, bow). At the same time, having received a grant from the George Soros Scientific Foundation, he performed with musical instruments, masks, and puppet theater "Batlejka" in ten cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In 2002, on the stage of Minsk Arena, Ivan presented the program "Sviaty viečar" (Holy Evening), which used archival recordings of the phonolaboratory of the Republican Radio. It was this performance that gave impetus to the creation of the folklore theater. Thus, while gradually studying folk wisdom, teaching stage theater of rites and manner of singing at the Belarusian State Pedagogical University named after Maxim Tank (1997-2016), he created his first one-man show "Enchanter", in which Belarusian folk songs from the cradle to the death bed to mourning are performed.
In 2005, together with the director of the Belarusian State Television Corporation, Syarhei Rybakov, Ivan Kirchuk went on a study trip to the Stolin District of the Brest Region. The result of this work was the record "Stolinshchyna" and the film "I Will be Sanctified by the Sun", which in 2006 was included in international film catalogs and was presented an award at the IV New York International Independent Film and Video Festival. In the new solo performance "I Will Be Sanctified by the Sun", Ivan extensively uses songs and improvisational orders. In 2011, the historical and cultural museum-reserve "Zaslaue" hosted an exhibition of collections of musical instruments from different parts of the world, as well as presented a restored version of "Enchanter. Continue". In 2014, the program "Confession under the Roofs", which took place in the 17th-century Pokrovsky Church of the Belarusian State Museum of Architecture and Life, was a success at the "Kamenitsa" festival. The one-man show "My Path...", which started in 2015, presents the calendar-ritual activity and life of a person from birth to death with new decorations and props.
Over the past five years, the mono-performance has been presented at the venues of the district and regional centers of Belarus, and was most vividly presented:
at the XXVI International Festival of Arts "Slavic Bazaar in Vitebsk" (Puppet Quarter 2017);
and received the Diploma for outstanding creative research of Belarusian cultural heritage in the mono-performance "My Path ...";
at the 22nd International Theater Festival "White Tower" (Brest 2017) and received a Diploma for highly artistic mastering of Belarusian folklore;
at the International Ethnic Festival "Krutushka" (Kazan, Russia, 2018);
at the International Theater Forum "THEART VIII" (Minsk, 2018);
at the XIV International Festival of One-Way Performances "Atspindys" (Visaginas, Lithuania, 2018);
and received a Diploma for professionalism, dedication to art, boundless creativity, and promotion of culture to the masses; a fragment of the solo performance "The Track" (Toronto, Canada, 2019);
at the First Festival of Traditional Music "Rajok" (Minsk, 2019)
The performance also received an award from the Belarusian film press "Red Heather" in the nomination "Best Music in the Film" (2019-2020) in the film "Code of the Ancestors" (Minsk, 2022).
In 2019, Ivan Kirchuk participated in the creation of the documentary "Code of the Ancestors" (Fresh Production Group), which explores the roots of the Belarusian and Ukrainian peoples, the search for their identity through the study of the melodicism of the Slavic ethnographic heritage. The film received the main prize of the Guild of Film Critics of Belarus XXVII Minsk International Film Festival "Listapad" in Minsk, took part in the Madurai International Film Festival 2020 (India), and the 29th International Festival of Ethnological Film in Belgrade (Serbia). Nativity dolls and musical instruments from the collection were included in the exhibition project "Symbols of Life", which was held in the National Library of Belarus in 2021 and 2022. Throughout his creative career, Ivan Kirchuk works not only with folk masters, from whom he orders many musical instruments for his one-man performances, but also with designers, practitioners, and teachers of creative centers, schools, and universities. All performances use masks: goat, bear, wolf, devil, death, etc., which not only enhances the performances but also arouses great interest among children and young people.
Thus, during the fruitful years of research and work, a unique theater of Belarusian folklore was formed, consisting of 12 ritual sites ("River of Fire", "Rusalnye Rozgari", "Ancestors", etc.), which includes almost 50 folk songs, musical pieces on folk instruments, orders and beliefs of Belarusians, and fragments of ceremonies and holidays. In recent times, the performance has been enhanced with new images: masks - Yarila (master Uladzimir Burakov). Spirit of the Field Master (Iryna Koval); new musical instruments - bagpipes (Master Dzianis Suhi), wind instruments (Masters Anna Mazovka, Aleksandr Blakhin, Syarhei Koid, Pavlo Kornya), string instruments (Master Dimitrii Bachishcha).
"Varažbit" (Enchanter) reveals all the wisdom of our ancestors, which does not lie on the surface but was preserved, as it were, by the priests and wizards of those times. The one-man performance, which existed under different names ("Holy Evening", "Enchanter", "I will be Sanctified by the Sun", "Confession under the Roofs", and "My Path…") and with different performers, turned into an incredible spectacle!
This is what Ivan Kirchuk has dreamed of for all his life.

Захоплёны народнай творчасцю, Іван Іванавіч Кірчук ужо 40 год прапагандуе і паказвае беларускі фальклор на рэспубліканскіх і міжнародных пляцоўках культуры. Усё пачалося з першай фальклорна- этнаграфічнай экспедыцыі ў 1983 годзе ў Любанскі раён Мінскай вобласці. У вёсцы Сарачы ад Шмялёвай Пілагеі Міхайлаўны ён запісваў фальклор з раніцы да гадзіны ночы! Вось з таго часу Іван Кірчук палюбіў мудрасць продкаў, пачаў вывучаць і ілюстраваць лепшыя ўзоры фальклору на канцэртах, майстар-класах і фестывалях. У гэтым яму добра дапамагалі ўдзельнікі гурта «Дзіва», які ён стварыў на базе Мінскага культасветвучылішча ў 1985 годзе.Падчас шматлікіх эксперыментаў з народнай манерай спеваў, у спалученні з рознымі інструментамі і гукавымі суправадженнямі ў 1995 годзе Іван Кірчук стварыў гурт «Троіца». За 27 год калектыў прыняў удел у больш за 100 фестывалях Беларусі, Расіі, Еўропы і Амерыкі. Выступаў у Малайзіі, Іспаніі, Канадзе. Яскрава заявіў аб сабе на трох найбуйнейшых фестывалях «Womad», якія ладзіў еўрапейскі музычны прадзюсар і спявак Пітер Габріэл у Англіі, Чылі, Расіі.
У 1999 годзе на знакамітай еўрапейскай гуказапісваючай студыі PAN records Іван Кірчук запісаў свой першы этнічны сольны альбом «Спадчына загінуўшых вёсак», які разышоўся амаль па ўсіх краінах свету. У кружэлцы прадстаўлены стылізаваныя атэнтычныя песні, сабраныя ў шматлікіх экспедыцыях па Беларусі. У якасці акампанементаў гучаць найгрышы на народных музычных інструментах, зробленых майстрамі Беларусі (чарот, акарына, дудка, гуслі, дуда, ліра, смык). У той жа час, атрымаўшы грант навуковага фонду Джорджа Сораса, выступаў з музычнымі інструментамі, маскамі і лялечным тэатрам «Батлейка» па дзесяці гарадах Босніі і Герцагавіны.
У 2002 годзе на сцэне к/з «Мінск» Іван прадставіў праграму «Святы вечар», у якой выкарыстаны архіўныя запісы фоналабараторыі рэспубліканскага радыё. Менавіта гэты выступ даў штуршок да стварэння фальклорнага тэатра. Так, паступова вывучаючы народную мудрасць, выкладаючы ў Беларускім дзяржайным педагагічным універсітаце імя Максіма Танка сцэнічную тэатралізацю абрадаў і манеру спеваў (1997-2016), стварыў свой першы монаспектакль «Варажбіт», у якім загучалі беларускія народныя песні ад калыскі да галашення.
Разам з рэжысёрам беларускага тэлебачання Сяргеем Рыбаковым у 2005 годзе Іван Кірчук выехаў у экследыцью на Століншчыну. Вынікам гэтай працы стала кружэлка «Століншчына» і фільм «Сонцам асвячуся», які ў 2006 годзе ўнесены міжнародныя кінакаталогі і ўзнагароджаны дыпломам на IV Нью-Ёркскім міжнародным незалежным кінафестывалі (New York International Independent Film and Video Festival). У новым монаспектаклі «Сонцам асвячуся» Іван шырока выкарыстоўвае не толькі песні, але і імправізацыйна выкананыя замовы. У 2011 годзе ў «Гісторыка-культурным музеі-запаведніку «Заслаўе» адбылася выстава капекцый сабраных музычных інструментаў з розных куткоў свету, а таксама прадстаўлена адноўлёная версія «Варажбіт. Працяг». У Пакроўскай царкве XVII стагоддзя Беларускага дзяржаўнага музея архітактуры і побыту ў 2014 годзе на фестывалі «Камяніца» мела поспех праграма «Споведзь пад стрэхамі». З 2015 года сваё творчае жыццё пачынае монаспектакль «Дарожка мая...», у якім прадстаўлена каляндарна-абрадавая дзейнасць і жыцце чалавека ад нарадження да смерці з новымі дэкарацьямі і рэквізітам.
За апошнія пяць гадоў монаспектакль быў прадстаўлены на пляцоўках раённых і абласных цэнтраў Беларусі, і найбольш яскрава: на XXVI Міжнародным фестывалі мастацтваў «Славянскі базар у Віцебску» (лялечны квартал 2017), атрыманы Дыплом за выбітнае творчае даследаванне беларускай культурнай спадчыны ў монаспектаклі «Дарожка мая...»;
на ХХІІ Міжнародным тэатральным фестывалі «Белая Вежа» (Брэст 2017), атрыманы Дыплом за высокамастацкае асваенне беларускага фальклору;
на Міжнародным этнічным фестывалі «Крутушка» (Казань, Расія, 2018);
на Міжнародным тэатральным форуме «ТЕАРТ VIII» (Мінск, 2018);
на XIV Міжнародным фестывалі монаспектакляў «Atspindys» (Вісагінас, Літва, 2018), атрыманы Дыплом за прафесіяналізм, самаадданасць мастацтву, бязмежную творчасць і прасоўванне культуры ў масы;
фрагмент монаспектакля «Дарожка» (Таронта, Канада, 2019);
на Першым фестывалі традыцыйнай музыкі «Rajok» (Мінск, 2019);
Прэмія беларускай кінапрэсы «Чырвоны верас» у намінацыі «Найлепшая музыка у фільме» (2019-2020) у кінастужцы «Код продкаў» (Мінск, 2022).
У 2019 годзе Іван Кірчук прыняў удзел у стваренні дакументальнага фільма «Код продкаў» (Fresh Production Group), у якім даследуюцца карані беларускага і украінскага народаў, пошук іх самабытнасці праз вывученне меладызму славянскай этнаграфічнай спадчыны. Кінастужка атрымала галоўны прыз Гільдыі кінакрытыкаў Беларусі XXVII Minsk International Film Festival «Listapad» у Мінску, прыняла удзел y Madurai International Film Festival 2020 (Iндыя), i 29th International Festival of Ethnological Film in Belgrade (Сербія). Батлеечныя лялькі, музычныя інструменты з калекцыі прынялі удзел у выставачным праекце «Сімвалы жыцця», які праходзіў у Нацянальнай бібліятацы Беларусі ў 2021-22 гг. На працягу ўсяго творчага шляху Іван Кірчук працуе не толькі з народнымі майстрамі, у якіх замаўляе мноства музычных інструментаў для сваіх монаспектакляў, але і з дызайнерамі, прикладнікамі, выкладчыкамі цэнтраў творчасці, школ, універсітатаў. Ва ўсіх спектаклях выкарыстоуваюцца маскі: казы, мядзведзя, ваўка, чорта, смерці і г.д., - што не толькі ўпрыгожвае пастаноўкі, але і выклікае вялікую цікавасць у дзяцей і моладзі.
Так, за плённыя гады пошуку і працы сфарміраваўся унікальны тэатр беларускага фальклору, складены з 12 рытуальных пляцовак («Вогненная рака», «Русальныя розгары», «Дзяды» і г.д.), у які ўвайшлі амаль 50 народных песень, музычныя найгрышы на народных інструментах, замовы і павер’i беларусаў, фрагменты абрадаў і святаў. У апошнія часы спектакль упрыгожаны новым вобразамі: маскамі - Ярыла (майстар Уладзімір Буракоў). Дух поля майстар (Iрына Коваль); новымі музычнымі інструментамі - дуды (майстар Дзяніс Сухi), духавым інструментамі (майстроў Ганны Мазоўка, Аляксандра Блахіна, Сяргея Койда, Паўла Корня), струннымі інструментамі (майстра Дзімітрыя Бачышча).
«Варажбіт» раскрывае ўсю мудрасць нашых продкаў, якая не ляжыць на паверхні, а захавана, нібы жрацамі, ведунамі тых часоў. Монаспектакль, які існаваў пад рознымі назвамі («Святы вечар», «Варажбіт», «Сонцам асвячуся», «Споведзь пад стрэхамі», «Дарожка мая») і з рознымі варяцымі выканання, ператварыўся ў неверагоднае відовішча!
