“On the waves of the fiery sea…”

“Night of Poets” —is an annual tradition dedicated to honoring the memory of Belarusian cultural, literary and artistic figures who became victims of Stalin’s repressions of the 1930s. The culmination of these tragic events was the “Black Night” from October 29 to 30, 1937, when more than 100 representatives of the Belarusian intellectual elite were shot in one night. So that their names, spirit and legacy do not disappear, people come together every year to read the poems of the repressed authors, remember their life path and reflect on their contribution to culture.

BINiM Canada (Belarusian Institute of Science and Arts in Canada) and BCA (Belarusian Canadian Alliance) organized an online presentation and meeting dedicated to honoring the memory of Belarusians shot in the 1930s, for which Vasyl Dranko-Maisyuk and Alena Bayarava (Literary vortex) prepared a poetic and musical event and a theatrical performance called “On the waves of the fiery sea…”.

Through stage art, recitation and dramatic dialogues, the performers strive to overcome the image of “abstract victims”, showing the destroyed writers as young, ambitious, talented and full of life people who created modern Belarusian culture. The leitmotif of the event is the idea of the project “(Not) Executed”: despite the physical destruction of the artists, their words, spirit, works, and thoughts remained alive and continue to resonate in contemporary culture.

Within the performance, works float and biographies of a whole constellation of Belarusian cultural figures are revealed:

  • Aleś Dudar (Alexander Dailidovich)— poet, critic and translator, author of the collection “La Marseillaise” and co-author of the novel “The Wolf Cubs”.
  • Anatol Volny (Anatoly Azhgirei)— one of the pioneers of the adventure genre in Belarusian prose and a screenwriter (“The Needles Are Talking”, “The Savoy Hotel”).
  • Mikhas Zaretsky (Mikhail Kasyankov)— the founder of the romantic movement in Belarusian Soviet prose and playwright (the plays “Whirlwind in the Swamp”, “White Roses”).
  • Michaś Čarot (Mikhail Kudelko)— poet, playwright (play “On Kupala”) and author of the story “The Pig Herder”, based on which the first Belarusian feature film “Forest Tale” was shot (he left his “Oath” on the wall of the Minsk prison).
  • Uladzislau Galubok— playwright, artist, actor, head of the Traveling Theater and the first People’s Artist of Belarus.
  • Poets and prose writers: Todar Klaštorny (master of landscape and philosophical lyrics),Yuliy Taubin (poet and translator of Heine and Mayakovsky), Yurka Liavonny (co-author of the translation of J. Verne’s novel “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”), Valery Marakov (author of the collections “Petals” and “On the Golden Scythe”), Brewers’ Land(poet and theater critic), Maysey Kulbak— an outstanding writer and playwright (author of the novel “The Zelmans”), Izi Kharyk— poet, publicist and public figure (author of the poems “Bread”, “With Soul and Body”)

The title of the performance, “On the Waves of a Fiery Sea…”, was not chosen by chance: it is drawn from a quote by one of the victims—the poet Ales Dudar—and serves as a metaphor for the dramatic and turbulent era of the 1920s and 1930s. This image of a “fiery sea” symbolizes both the intense creative impulses, ideals, and vibrant lives of the young Belarusian intellectual elite, and the tragic flames of the Stalinist terror—which destroyed them, yet failed to consume their legacy.
