The intent was to organize, unite, and create a single academic and artistic body with official status for scholars, writers, artists, classical and folk musicians, performers, artisans and other professionals of Bie\u0142arusian origin. The new institute and its membership planned to promote intellectual, scholarly and cultural knowledge about their native Bie\u0142aru\u015b in their recently adopted country, Canada, and in the United States and Europe.\n\nDr. Raisa \u017duk-Hry\u0161kievi\u010d, one of the institute\u2019s founders, had written about the BINiM\u2019s genesis in her 1993 book, Life of Vincent \u017duk-Hry\u0161kievi\u010d (288, 398-400). This manuscript is also a chronicle of Bie\u0142arusian life in Canada from 1950 to 1992. Many of the book\u2019s photographs were taken by Mr. Janka Survilla, a member of the Canadian BINiM. Dr. Raisa \u017duk-Hry\u0161kievi\u010d also made an oral presentation about the history of the Canadian BINiM during the institute\u2019s annual general meeting in 2002. She confirmed that for a duration of thirteen months, BINiM, Canada, was a chapter of BINiM in the USA. The latter was inaugurated in 1951 and at that time all the founding members of the Canadian BINiM had a long-standing affiliation with the BINiM, USA. In order to participate in academic forums and artistic events in Canada and elsewhere, however, Bie\u0142arusian Canadians needed their own organization. Dr. Raisa \u017duk-Hry\u0161kievi\u010d chronicled this fact in her book:\n\nAt the Second National Conference of the Canadian Slavists (CAS), which took place 9-11 June 1967, Dr. Vincent \u017duk-Hry\u0161kievi\u010d, member of the BINiM, USA, gave a paper titled \u201cBie\u0142arusians and Canadian Statistics.\u201d He was representing a civic organization, Bie\u0142arusian Canadian Alliance (founded in 1948), but this contravened the rules of CAS\u2019s academic meetings, which state that a lecturer had to be a part of a (Canadian) scholarly organization. This case became a major incentive for establishing the Canadian BINiM (Raisa\u017duk-Hry\u0161kievi\u010d, 208).\n\nThe Canadian Association of Slavists\u2019 (CAS) role in BINiM\u2019s inception is definitive and substantial. CAS was formed in 1954, and the association immediately conducted its own conference. The next conference, in which Dr.Vincent \u017duk-Hry\u0161kievi\u010d participated, took place only twelve years later. Despite the gap between CAS\u2019s first two conferences, the organization annually published a first-class scholarly journal, Canadian Slavonic Papers(CSP) since 1954, which became biannual at the end of the 1980s. Starting with the second conference, CAS resumed regular annual scholarly meetings and later became part of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS). Consequently, Canadian members of BINiM were able to become CAS members and take part at the CFHSS\u2019s annual academic meetings. Thus, Bie\u0142arusian Canadians established a national institute that qualified its members to take part in national and international scholarly meetings: congresses, conferences, summits, and symposia. These meetings allowed the membership to attract attention and spread knowledge about Bie\u0142aru\u015b without Tsarist or Soviet ideological focus.\n\nThe Bie\u0142arusian Institutes of Arts and Sciences in the United States and in Canada are closely related in their origin, missions, aims and activities. Due to a much larger Bie\u0142arusian presence, a seventeen-year longer history, and financial resources, BINiM, USA has a good number of periodicals in Bie\u0142arusian. In contrast, English became the major tool for Canadian BINiM\u2019s dissemination of knowledge about Bie\u0142aru\u015b.\n<h3>Some Events Sponsored by BINiM, Canada from 1967 to 1989<\/h3>\nThe initial presentation of Dr. Vincent \u017duk-Hry\u0161kievi\u010d at CAS in 1967 was followed in 1971 by a major academic conference, entitled Bie\u0142arusian-CanadianDays, at Queen\u2019s University (Kingston, Ontario). Both academic and cultural events were organized on the behalf of the university by Professor Janka (John) Sado\u016dski and Mr. Alie\u015b Hrycuk. Six extended papers by scholars and members of the BINiM, Canada, were read and discussed in English during the conference. An exhibit (organized by the Hrycuk family) showed the works of Bie\u0142arusian folk artists and artisans and it attracted much interest.\n\nIn 1975, the University of Ottawa hosted a very successful Bie\u0142arusian Week, organized by the BINiM, Canada, the Department of Slavic Studies of the University of Ottawa, and the Canadian Museum of Man (currently: CanadianMuseum of History). Events of the Bie\u0142arusian Week included a Conference on the \u201cBie\u0142arusian Presence in North America,\u201d a Poetry Evening celebrating Natalla Arsie\u0144nieva's poetry, and an Exhibition of Bie\u0142arusian Folk Art. Twelve papers, each followed by a discussion, were delivered by Bie\u0142arusian and Ukrainian scholars from Canada and the United States.\n\nDuring the Poetry Evening as well as the official opening of the Conference,the multinational audience had the pleasure of hearing the poet herself who read some of her best works. The Evening was chaired by Prof. Anton Adamovich, and the audience was welcomed by the President of the BINIM, Canada, Ivonka Survilla, the Chair of the Department of Slavic Studies, Prof. Kanstancin Bida, and Prof. Bogdan Plaskacz, a distinguished member of the organizingCommittee.\n\nThe Exhibition was held at the Unicenter of Ottawa University. The Survilla family travelled throughout Eastern United States and Canada to collect rare exhibits which completed the Museum\u2019s Bie\u0142arusian collection. The official opening, on April 19th, was attended by many Canadian friends of Bie\u0142aru\u015b, who were welcomed by the President of BINIM, Canada, Mrs. Ivonka Survilla and by Dr. R. Klymasz on behalf of the Museum.\n\nUntil 2010, Zapisy (BINiM\u2019s, USA an annual almanac), regularly reported on academic, professional, and cultural activities in both the USA and Canada. For example, Zapisy \u2116 17 (1983) published extended reports of the Presidents of the BINiM, USA (Dr. Vita\u016dt Tuma\u0161) and BINiM, Canada (Mrs. Ivonka Survilla; the recent reprint of both reports are in Kamunikat.org 2015 [9-16]). In his report, Dr. Tuma\u0161 recognized contributions of the Canadian BINiM (10), and Mrs. Survilla indicated the number of major cultural events sponsored by the Canadian Institution, among which she explained one of the expositions: \u201cTo celebrate the 450th Anniversary of Bie\u0142arusian Printing, an exhibition of prints and books dedicated to Franci\u0161ak Skaryna was organized in Toronto.\u201d(16) The journal would note Canadian BINiM\u2019s membership\u2019s professional achievements of different scope. Thus, it is observed in Zapisy \u2116 19, 1989(p. 177): \u201cThe Medical Association of Ontario had a special meeting in Toronto, Canada. During the event, it commemorated the professional medical achievements of Dr. Barys Ragula, MD with a prestigious award named after GlenSawyer.\u201d Zapisy \u2116 22, 1996, published information about the events of 1992 on page 117: \u201cHarvard University held a conference, dedicated to a cultural development of the people of Eastern Europe, where Maria Pa\u016dla Survilla presented a paper \u201cKupallie (the summer solstice): Strengthening through Bie\u0142arusian Ritual.\u201d There were many such examples observed in each issue of Zapisy. The reader could note that Dr. Raisa \u017duk-Hry\u0161kievi\u010d regularly held literary evenings while the Survilla family (Ivonka and Janka) organized Bie\u0142arusian participation in Ottawa\u2019s annual festival, \u201cFatherlands\u201d between 1979 and 1989. In turn, Professor John Sado\u016dski continued to present scholarly papers at CAS\u2019s yearly meetings until he died at the age of 52.\n<h3>BINiM (Canada) from 1989 to 2016<\/h3>\nDr. Sado\u016dski\u2019s academic influence continued despite his untimely death. Starting in 1989, a Bie\u0142arusian scholarly presence was re-established first at the annual congress of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and SocialSciences (CFHSS), and, from 1990 on, at the largest Slavists\u2019 annual congress, the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies(\u0410\u0410\u0410SS, USA); presently this organization and its annual congress has been renamed, the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES, US-GB); the major scholarly journal, Slavic Review, did not change its name.\n\nStarting in 1989, the first Canadian BINiM \u201ctrinity,\u201d Ivonka Survilla, Maria-Pa\u016dlina Survilla, and Zina Gimpelevich, received a significant amount of help from the membership of the BINiM, USA. For five years, until Canadian BINiM was established as an equal part of Slavic Studies, Drs. Thomas E. Bird, Vita\u016dt Kipel, Ala Romano, Janka Zaprudnik, along with Zora Kipel (MA, LibrarySciences), Nadzeia Zaprudnik (MA, Arts), Halina Rusak (MA, Arts), and some others, rendered strong support by participating at CAS\u2019s annual conferences. Also, for the World Congress of Humanities, which took place in Toronto 2003, Professor Arnold McMillin and Father Alexander Nadson arrived from London, UK; professor Curt Woolhiser came from Harvard, along with Drs. Vita\u016dt Kipel and Janka Zaprudnik. Dr. Vincent Via\u010dorka (invited by BINiM, Canada) and Prof. Stanisla\u016d \u0160u\u0161kievi\u010d gave extended presentations. Many foreign scholars of different areas of study involved Bie\u0142aru\u015b in their presentations. All together during this forum, eighteen papers dedicated to different aspects and disciplines of Bie\u0142arusian Studies were delivered and well received by the world academic community.\n\nFor the period of 1989-2007, members of the Canadian BINiM presented over 90s cholarly papers and established Bie\u0142arusian Studies as an integral part of Canadian and international Humanities and Social Sciences. Canadian BINiM members were invited and took part at the conferences and symposia, and presented individual lectures at Harvard, Sorbonne, Oxford, Cambridge, Nottingham, and other universities of the old and new world and the institute\u2019s presence was noted in almost all of the world congresses. Bie\u0142arusian-Canadian artists and artisans took part in personal and collective exhibitions. For example, at the 2009 Congress of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS) at Carleton University in Ottawa, which had over nine thousand delegates, BINiM\u2019s membership was well-represented on the academic stage and through an exhibition of arts and crafts. A performance by the folk group Yavarovy ludzi (artistic director Violetta Kovaleva) was supported by the classical musical duet Cantabile (U\u0142ada \u0160amie\u0107ka [violin] and Micha\u015b Ryka\u016d [guitar]) and other singers and instrumentalists of Bie\u0142arusian origin, who performed in the concert hall of the university. Over four hundred delegates attended this artistic event. In addition, BINiM, Canada organized an exposition of Slavic artists, that included original visual art and crafts of different genres by Bie\u0142arusian masters.\n\nFor many years, graduate students from the University of Waterloo represented both BINiM and the university at conferences and congresses with their papers. Here are just some of the titles which were delivered over the years: \u201cBie\u0142arusian Fairy-Tales,\u201d \u201cLiterary History of Bie\u0142aru\u015b,\u201d \u201cLiterary Note-book of Valancin Kryvi\u010d-Annenski,\u201d \u201cBie\u0142arusian Literature about Chernobyl,\u201d and many more.\n<h3>The BINiM, Canada also attracted attention to Bie\u0142arusian Studies for manyworld established scholars.<\/h3>\nCanadian members of BINiM continually rendered assistance to the BINiM, USA in terms of strengthening Bie\u0142arusian academic studies in the United States. Thus, North American Academic Bie\u0142arusian Studies (NAAB) and Center forBie\u0142arusian Studies (CBS) were organized and administrated for many years by Canadian BINiM\u2019s members (Dr. Maria-Pa\u016dlina Survilla was NAAB\u2019s presidentprior to accepting a leading administrative position [Executive Director] atthe CBS).\n\nIndeed, Canadian membership continues to represent BINiM in Canada and abroad. One of the typical examples is participation in the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS) Congress in 2014 (Ivonka Survilla, Maria-Pa\u016dlina Survilla, and Zina Gimpelevich). Altogether more than one hundred and forty presentations took place over the years. Many of them are published in peer-reviewed publications. For example, here are the most recent invited lectures, given by Zina Gimpelevich: \u201cSelected Use of Vikonyms and Urbanonyms in Shtetls and Miaste\u010dka (s) as Reflected in Bie\u0142arusian Literature\u201d at Vitebsk State University\u2019s international conference: Regional Onomastics (18-19 February 2016); and \u201cPortrayal of Litvaks inBie\u0142arusian Literature\u201d at the Symposium: Between the Lands. From Poland toRussia via Bie\u0142aru\u015b and Ukraine: A Journey through Cinema, History,Literature, Memory and Music. (The School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London. 23-25 June 2016).\n\nAt the same time, members and affiliates of the Canadian BINiM have had many individual accomplishments. Thus, Mr. Jurka Aku\u0142a, Ms. Aliona Lapko, Ms. Ja\u016dhieniia \u0160a\u016d\u010denka, Mrs. Ivonka Survilla, Dr. Maria Pa\u016dla Survilla, Mr.Peter Schwartzman, and many others take part in personal and collective arts and folk arts exhibitions. Ms. Ja\u016dhieniia \u0160a\u016d\u010denka, an architect, designer, and original painter, designed Canadian BINiM\u2019s symbol, our beloved Pahonia(The Pursuer). Mrs. Iryna Varabei successfully propagates Bie\u0142arusian folk needlework; she also created a site called \u201cSpirit of Bie\u0142aru\u015b.\u201d The folkgroup Yavarovy ludzi continues to strive under the directorship of Mrs.Violetta Kovaleva. Ms. Sviatlana Litvinava is a professional singer and takes part in many national and international musical events. Duet Cantabile supports and adorns every Bie\u0142arusian cultural event. Mrs. Valancina \u0160a\u016d\u010denka sings solo classical romantic arias, plays guitar, and takes part in Bie\u0142arusian and national concerts and performances. Mr. Jurka \u0160a\u016d\u010denka recently undertook a complete renovation and restoration of the Bie\u0142arusian Memorial Cross. DSc. Piotra Murzionak, MD regularly publishes the Quarterly web-magazine Culture and Nation (est. 2013). The Bie\u0142arusian literary group includes a substantial number of talented writers and poets (please see the membership list which includes each member\u2019s short bio).\n\nIndeed, Canadian BINiM directly influences Bie\u0142arusian studies and culture in Canada and assists in their growth and development. As a result, this discipline earned its place among the country\u2019s other disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Each of the members in Canadian BINiM serves in a unique capacity and promotes the institution\u2019s mission and activities in addition to their incessant professional and community work. Thus, Ivonka Survilla and Zina Gimpelevich were two out of three founding members of the Canadian Relief Fund for Children of Chernobyl in Bie\u0142aru\u015b (the third is Ms. Paula Smith-Pa\u0161kievi\u010d). This national organization assisted thousands of Bie\u0142arusian children to recuperate in Canada, provided medical and dental services to the Bie\u0142arusian children during their stay in Canada, and supplied medical and dental equipment, food, clothing items and parcels to the children and their families in Bie\u0142aru\u015b proper. In fact, Canadians of all the ethnicities, gain the knowledge about Bie\u0142aru\u015b, fell in love with Bie\u0142arusian children and have been continued treating them as members of their new extended families.\n\nThe most recent community event, the 32nd Congress of North American Bie\u0142arusians took place in Ottawa (September 2016) and was organized by the Bie\u0142arusian Canadian Alliance in cooperation with the Bie\u0142arusian American Alliance. Many of the key organizers and participants are members of the BINiMin Canada and the USA. This event became an illustration of a beautiful fusion of academic, cultural, and communal work that Bie\u0142arusians have been performing in both countries. Consequently, it emphasized that Canadian BINiM, which took part in the event, continues to work in accordance with its mission.<\/blockquote><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-55-1-1\"
